Mykonos had several days of rough weather leading up to the highly anticipated world premiere lyric opera performance of HERA decends on DELOS. The Oct. 6th. performance had to be cancelled as the seas were too rough to transport everyone from Mykonos to Delos. Thankfully the high seas and winds subsided, the sun was out and everyone excitedly assembled in the Italian Agora on anciend Delos. It was definitely worth the trip!
The story of the opera begins within the sanctuary of ancient Delos addressing the fear of mortality and the tedium of immortality.
A sick man arrives on the island and tries to negotiate his survival with the immortal goddesses Hera and Aphrodite, coming to grips with his own mortality as his life comes to a close.
Inspired by Alexandra Dimou, “Hera” was composed and directed by Theodore Abazis, The libretto was written by Elsa Andrianou. The opera features mezzo soprano Irene Karagianni, actor Manolis Mavromatakis, soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou and the Municipal Plucked String Instrument Orchestra of Patra, conducted by Anastasios Symeonidis.
To watch Hera and Aphrodite meet with this mortal, and all of us who were present on Delos, (where no one has ever been buried), was a wonderful experience I will not soon forget!
