A Holy Walk In Mykonos

Observant Greek Orthodox Mykonians walk faithfully every year from Ano Mera (in the center of Mykonos island), to the Chora (main town). This 2 1/2 hour, 7km. walk of young and old is always on the Saturday after Ash Monday. Islanders escort their very precious icon, the Virgin Mary from the Panagia Tourliani Monastery to it’s temporary resting place at one of three churches in the Chora. This year it is displayed at Panahra church.

People line the streets encouraging the walkers and handing out free water. Church bells ring out as the icon passes. Many join in the long walk on this beautiful day in Mykonos.
