The Best Way To Rent A Car In Mykonos

The best way to get around Mykonos island is by car. Even if you stay in town, you will probably want to explore other points of the island before leaving. Taxis can be very difficult to get during the high season. The only taxi I love taking is the water taxi that you can take from Tourlos Port into and out of town. If you are staying in Mykonos Town, Ornos, Platis Gialos, or Agios Ioannis, there is bus service from these areas to some of the 35 beaches that Mykonos has.

RentalCars.com is a great website for reserving car rentals at the best prices for Mykonos. You would select Mykonos International Airport or Mykonos Old Port (in town). My suggestion is to book a car rental at the airport even if you arrive at Tourlos Port. The airport has the most selection and best prices. It is much easier to pick up there than in the congested areas near town. The port is quite chaotic when you first arrive. Trying to find your car rental can be difficult. You can take a taxi or bus from the port to the airport.

If you are staying in one of the many villas outside of town, and arriving at the port, you might arrange a transport pick up and then arrange to retrieve your car after you have settled into your accommodations.

Mykonos Airport Car Rental

The airport is only 10 minutes from town. There are kiosks at the airport where you pick up your car. The airport was recently expanded and relatively easy to retrieve your vehicle. Budget, Hertz, Avis, Thrifty, Alamo, Enterprise and Sixt are all at the Mykonos Airport.

Advice

*Book in advance if you expect to travel during peak season (June-September).

*To rent a car in Greece, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and you must have held your license for at least 1 year. Drivers renting a car under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. An international drivers license is required.

*If you drive an automatic, book ahead. Most cars in Mykonos are manual.

*If you prefer an ATV or scooter, then you must book with the local companies. Be advised that many roads are smaller and rough. The ATV’s and scooters can be difficult to handle.

*Pick up you vehicle at the airport. It’s much more accessible than in town.
